Remembering Ali Maher

To commemorate and honor the late Jordanian architect and artist Ali Maher (1956 - 2013), The Center for the Study of the Built Environment (CSBE) has started a Tumblr and a Facebook page to share experiences and memories about Ali. Ali Maher was born in Amman, Jordan in 1956. He studied Architecture at the Moscow Architectural Institute, graduating in 1984. At various stages of his career, he worked as a design consultant, owned a private architectural office, and founded a studio for animation and industrial design. He also taught design and drawing at the University of Jordan, Petra University, Balqa Applied University, and the German Jordanian University. Moreover, he served for more than ten years as the director of Darat al Funun, the Amman-based non-profit organization promoting modern art. At the time of his death on June 11, 2013 he was a commissioner for the Royal Film Commission and also ran the “Atelier Baba” art school, which he had established. Ali, moreover, was a painter, book illustrator, and film actor. He appeared in several Jordanian films, the best known of which is “Captain Abu Raed” (2007). Fondly known as “the Sheikh of Amman,” or simply “Baba,” he is remembered by many for his outgoing personality, warmth, and generosity.
