The Royal Court Compound

The Royal Court Compound, also known as the Raghdan Royal Palaces, was established in the early 1920s. The site, which was originally a military camp, is located in the older part of Amman, on top of a 170-hectare hill overlooking the city’s downtown area. The site is also close to the Hijaz Railway Station and Amman's Marka Airport. It is bordered by al-Urdun (Jordan) Street from the west and by al-Istiqlal (Independence) Street from the north.

The compound contains a number of royal palaces as well as the Royal Cemetery. Although it was originally established as a residential complex for Jordan’s Royal Family, it has evolved to also accommodate royal offices and to host ceremonial events.

Although the compound is not open to the public, it nonetheless has rich historical, cultural, and environmental significances. The site housed many of Jordan’s important political, economic, and cultural events. King Abdullah I also regularly opened Raghdan Palace for public mourning upon the death of important Jordanian figures. In addition, it hosted cultural gatherings for Arab writers and poets. Moreover, the compound, which contains a considerable amount of native vegetation and forests as well as designed open green spaces, is significant as a natural space and stands out as a green lung among the surrounding dense urban area.
